Our Technology

The key to our reliability is redundancy.

For example, we utilize two datacenters, not one, and the two are hundreds of miles apart to ensure that no single natural disaster can cause a loss. Just entering a datacenter requires passing not one but two user-authentication systems, including biometric scanners and other access controls. Customer mailbox data is stored on mirrored (redundant) disk arrays (RAID1 and RAID10). For triple redundancy, tape backups are made every 24 hours and are kept for two weeks. The datacenters are staffed 24/7 to monitor all servers, firewalls, routers, switches and connectivity. Every element of the system is redundant from edge routers to core switches. Even the power backup systems have backup systems, and a complete duplicate HVAC system can take over the task of cooling should the primary system fail.

There is also redundancy in the network. Our data is routed through seven tier-one network carriers to provide inherent network redundancy to eliminate dependence on any one network or carrier.

The software and systems that run our protective services are redundant as well:

Our VirusTrap™ anti-virus system runs two independent and parallel virus scans (from different vendors) on each incoming message, and the latest virus definitions are automatically loaded at least hourly, and sometimes within minutes, to quickly capture any emerging threat. Both vendors have engineers working 24/7 to identify and respond to new viruses popping up around the world.

After scanning, any messages with attachments containing dangerous types of files are automatically bounced. Other stages of the VirusTrap™ system check for formatting vulnerabilities, run decompression routines and manage quarantine activities.

More than 80% of email today is spam, and our Spam Intercept™ anti-spam system uses multiple sources of spam intelligence to track and block spam. This system tracks more than 10,000 known spam characteristics, and each email is processed through several thousand tests to provide the best capture of spam and the fewest false-positives possible. Additional systems prevent Directly Harvest Attacks, which are spammer’s attempts to identify valid email addresses within a domain. Finally, Blacklist Prevention measures keep spam senders off our system and protect legitimate users and maintain the integrity of the system.
